Thank you for the link on how to freeze cookies, but these didn’t make it to the freezer. OH my Stars! They are incredible! My husband and I think they taste just like oreos but so much better! I did make them about half the size so they would go further (1tsp filling to 30g of dough). These went in a variety cookie box along with your Oatmeal Chocolate chip and a few others. I will be making these again before the season is over!

Hi Julia! I have an article on how to freeze cookie dough that you can reference. Baking from frozen will typically take an extra minute or so. πŸ™‚

You can buy it at Walmart, target and Amazon.

What are the instructions for making them ahead of time and freezing before baking? I am wondering after they’re frozen solid, how long to leave them at room temperature before baking.

Sent my husband to buy the cocoa for these. He couldn’t find black cocoa powder so I made them with regular cocoa powder. They are now called reindeer poops in my house πŸ˜‚ they were amazing though. I’ve been wanting to make these so I finally had the mental energy to whip them up. I had left over buttercream that I had in the freezer so I used that and put it back in the freezer to harden up again. I put the assembled cookies in the freezer last night for about 5 hours and made 2 “test” cookies. One of them exploded as I was taking them out of the oven but that’s on me as I assume I missed a tiny spot when I was sealing the cookie dough around the frosting.
My taste tester aka my husband said they were absolutely delicious and reminded him of a lava cake. I’m going to be making these for ‘Breakfast with Santa’ at our kids school.

Love this recipe! I never knew “Black Cocoa” was a thing. We bought a bag for this recipe and have since incorporated it into cakes and frostings. Our cookies were a bit flatter than your pic, but not terribly so. We intentionally go easy on our flour to avoid stiff cookies so we weren’t surprised. They were a huge hit, and we’ll make these again and again.

Thank you so much for this site, and the work you’ve done creating it.

Hmm did you make any substitutions? Did you weigh your flour?

My son asked for coal for Christmas. This was perfect. They are delicious. They remind me of Oreos, but better!

Before they went into the oven they looked just like yours. I followed the instructions as you wrote them but when I got them out of oven they were big flat round cookies. Their beautiful coal shape was gone. Everyone at the party ate them not knowing they were to look like coal. I am very sad that their features fell thru. Where did I go wrong and why b4 the oven trip they looked like a lump of coal but after baking they lost their beauty?

These cookies are amazing! My husband’s exact words were “I’ve never been impressed by a cookie, I’m impressed by these!” Absolute killer of a recipe.
