Hi Deb! You would likely need to half the recipe for it to fit in an 8 inch square pan, but I think it could work. Let me know how it turns out! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you! Deb]]> Sam, do you think it would work to make half recipe for baking in an 8 inch square pan? Only reason I am thinking of trying that is it is just my husband and I now. I have a bunch of ripe peaches and thought this cake with peaches and whipped cream on top would be yummy ๐Ÿ˜Š Otherwise, I could make the full recipe and use a 9×13 inch pan, and just have more in the freezer.

Thank you!

Deb

I am now 74. It was published in an old Rumford Baking Powder cookbook. This is the easiest cake recipe that I know and I know it by heart. Its delicious every time!

Perfect. Turns out just as described. I was nervous about pouring hot milk into my egg mixture, but it works. I made a mistake and added too much milk to the frosting. Used it anyway and carefully glazed the cake. Turned out pretty anyway. Looked like the bunt cake had been dipped in chocolate.

In reply to Sam.

this is exactly my grandmother’s and mothers hot milk cake recipe. nobody else but my family seems to make this in my area, but whenever I make it for work or my friends, and of course my family, everyone loves it! heck half of my friends have box cake and think they’re good, yuck.

this cake is so versatile one of my favorite summertime change-ups is to replace a quarter cup of milk with a quarter cup of fresh squeezed orange juice then put vanilla buttercream with a little bit of OJ and some orange wine in the icing! it is delicious!

Hi Hafsa! You can reduce the sugar, but be careful not to reduce it too much, or you could affect how the cake turns out. We’re so happy you enjoyed it!

Hi Sven! Nope, the eggs don’t cook. If you watch the video, you can see the batter is just fine after adding the hot milk. We hope you love it!

Don’t the eggs cook when you pour almost boiling milk in the mixture? Most recipes with eggs and hot liquid (like choux pastry e.g.), tell you to wait until the hot liquid is below 63 Celsius/145 Fahrenheit to avoid that.

Hi Melissa! I haven’t tried watering down half and half, but I think it could work here. I’m not exactly sure how to do it so I can’t advise on how to do it. If you try it I would love to know how it turns out. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Judith! You could make this into a layer cake. I’m not sure you’d need to double the frosting though. You may need a bit extra but without having tried it I can’t say for sure how much you’d need.

I want to try your recipe – could I make this as a layer cake? If so, I assume I would need to at least double the frosting – is that correct/

Iโ€™ve been making this same recipe for the cake since I can remember. It was passed down from grandma to my mom. Itโ€™s an absolute winner!! We always have it with a simple buttercream and chunks of semisweet chocolate on the icing but itโ€™s just as good plain. Maybe Iโ€™ll have to try it with a fudge icing now!

Hi Cheryl! It was published several years ago, the recipe is the same, as are the photos and the video. I just resurfaced it to the front of the blog since many people here are new and hadn’t seen it before, and the old recipes would be lost if they weren’t occasionally resurfaced. If I make changes they are always noted (see my chocolate cupcakes as an example). I hope that helps explain it ๐Ÿ™‚

I think it would be nice to note this and perhaps mention any recipe improvements or new pictures you have added.
